On 25 April 1974, the Portuguese military overthrew the Estado Novo dictatorship. The revolution was so swift and so peaceful that soldiers who did not want to fight placed red carnations in their rifle barrels. Civilians handed flowers to the tanks. By evening, Lisbon was free.
