The Christmas Orchid (Cattleya trianae) — Colombia's national flower — is named after the Colombian botanist José Jerónimo Triana who first documented it for European science. It blooms in December, hence its common name, and grows at 1,500 to 2,000 metres in the Andean cloud forests of Colombia. Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on earth, home to over 4,000 orchid species; the Christmas Orchid was chosen to represent all of them. Now classified as endangered due to deforestation.
