PLATE 27 — Amphitheatrum Flavium, Rome. Begun under Emperor Vespasian and inaugurated under Titus in 80 CE with 100 days of games. Seated 50,000–80,000 spectators. Its architectural achievement is the standardised system of arches, vaults and piers repeated across three levels — a solution so efficient that Roman engineers repeated it across the empire. Botanical companions of the classical Mediterranean: Rosa gallica, Acanthus mollis (whose leaf inspired classical architectural ornament), Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis), Bearded Iris and Corn Poppy. Labels: arena, arches, vaults, seating tiers, hypogeum. The architectural note: arch, vault and repeated arcade — the building's monumental rhythm.

An original 98types design on 260gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, printed in England. From £3. Buy 3 get 1 free. Same-day dispatch.
