PLATE 18 — Testudines. The turtle's shell is not a detachable house but an integrated part of the skeleton — the carapace (upper shell) and plastron (lower shell) incorporate modified ribs and vertebrae. Many species can withdraw the head and limbs. Aquatic botanical companions: White Water Lily, Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), Yellow Flag Iris, Giant Water Lily (Victoria amazonica) and Corn Poppy. Labels: carapace, plastron, scute, neck, forelimb, hind limb. The field note: carapace above, plastron below — two halves of a remarkable structure.

An original 98types design on 260gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, printed in England. From £3. Buy 3 get 1 free.
