The DCU Begins — James Gunn Resets DC Cinema

Superman (2025), written and directed by James Gunn — who became co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in 2022 — is the first film of the rebooted DC Universe. Gunn's approach to Superman is a deliberate return to the character's fundamental identity as an immigrant story: Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, raised as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas, is the story of someone who looks different from everyone around him, came from somewhere else, and chooses to use his specific abilities in the service of a society that has not always been kind to those who don't fit. This reading of Superman — not the god-like alien but the immigrant with a specific moral commitment to the country that raised him — is Gunn's central creative thesis.

David Corenswet, cast as Clark Kent/Superman, brings a specific physical presence — tall, genuinely broad-shouldered, with a face that reads as both handsome and honest rather than merely attractive — that suits the character's requirement of someone who is simultaneously the most powerful person in any room and the most genuinely kind. The casting of Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane — a performer whose comic timing and specific quality of intelligent impatience are the exact register Lois requires — and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor is the finest pre-release casting decision in any superhero film since Heath Ledger as the Joker in 2008.

James Gunn — From Guardians to Superman

James Gunn's filmography before Superman (2025) is the most commercially successful run for an independent-turned-studio director in recent memory: Guardians of the Galaxy (2014, 91% RT, $773M), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017, 84% RT, $863M), The Suicide Squad (2021, 91% RT), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023, 82% RT, $845M). The consistent quality of his work — ensemble comedies that conceal genuine emotional investment in their characters, action sequences that serve character rather than spectacle, original scores that use licensed music as emotional counterpoint — suggests that his approach to Superman will be fundamentally character-driven rather than mythologically overwhelming.
