Guillermo del Toro's Lifelong Dream — The Monster Creator and His Creation

Frankenstein (2025), directed by Guillermo del Toro and streaming on Netflix, is the project del Toro has described as his most personal film: a filmmaker who has spent his entire career exploring the relationship between monstrosity and humanity (Pan's Labyrinth, 2006; The Shape of Water, 2017, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture; Nightmare Alley, 2021) returning to the source text of the Gothic horror tradition he has always inhabited. Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is the founding document of science fiction and the text that first articulated the specific modern anxiety about scientific creation outstripping moral wisdom.

Del Toro's casting is the most distinguished ensemble for a horror film in recent memory: Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who creates life and cannot bear what he has made; Mia Goth as the Bride; Jacob Elordi as the Creature; Charles Dance as an authority figure in the Frankenstein social world; Ralph Ineson as a character whose identity del Toro has not disclosed. The choice of Elordi as the Creature — a performer whose physical presence and specific quality of vulnerability beneath surface intimidation (seen in Saltburn, 2023, and Priscilla, 2023) makes him the most appropriate casting for a character who is simultaneously terrifying and pitiable — is the production decision that most clearly indicates del Toro's intentions.

Guillermo del Toro — The Monster Humanist

Del Toro's specific contribution to the horror genre is the inversion of its standard moral framework: in conventional horror, the monster is the threat to be eliminated; in del Toro's films, the monster is the most sympathetic figure. Pan's Labyrinth's Pale Man and the Faun are not villains; The Shape of Water's amphibian creature is the film's romantic hero; Frankenstein's Creature is Shelley's most emotionally complex creation — a being who wants love, community and recognition that is denied by the person who created him and by the society he inhabits. Del Toro's cinema is an extended argument that the figures society designates as monstrous are usually the ones most clearly able to see its failures.

Why This Is the Horror Poster of 2025

Frankenstein (2025) is the horror event film of 2025: a director who has won the Academy Award for Best Picture applying his complete filmmaking sensibility to the text that defined the Gothic horror tradition, with an ensemble cast of extraordinary quality and a production design that del Toro has described as the most elaborate of his career. The Frankenstein poster at 98types captures the film's visual identity: the Gothic laboratory, the electrical equipment, the specific quality of del Toro's colour palette — the deep greens and blacks of his monster films, the amber of his laboratory scenes.
