"Is It Just Me, or Is It Getting Crazier Out There?"

Joker (2019), directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, is the highest-grossing R-rated film in cinema history at $1.079 billion worldwide — the film that definitively proved that a dark, psychologically serious, anti-spectacle superhero origin film could outperform franchise blockbusters at the global box office. Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor, the BAFTA for Best Actor and the Screen Actors Guild Award; the film won the Venice Golden Lion — the first DC Comics adaptation and the first superhero film to win the festival's top prize.

The film's creative decision was radical: to ignore the DC Extended Universe entirely, to shoot in the visual register of 1970s New York realist cinema (specifically Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1982), the latter referenced explicitly), and to tell the story of the Joker not as a supervillain origin but as a study of mental illness, social neglect and the specific violence of a society that abandons its most vulnerable members. The film was shot on 35mm film at Silvercup Studios, New York, and on location throughout the Bronx and Brooklyn — locations chosen for their specific quality of late-1970s/early-1980s urban decay.

Joaquin Phoenix's Performance — The Physical and Psychological Transformation

Phoenix lost 52 pounds for the role — the most significant weight loss for a mainstream Hollywood film since Christian Bale in The Machinist (2004). The physical consequence is visible in every scene: the specific quality of Arthur Fleck's posture, the way his clothes hang from him, the vulnerability of someone whose body has been diminished to match his social position. Phoenix developed the Joker's laugh — the involuntary, uncontrollable condition that causes Arthur to laugh at the worst possible moments — by studying people with pseudobulbar affect (the neurological condition the laugh represents) and finding a physically specific version that was distinct from every previous Joker portrayal.

The Staircase Scene — The Most Downloaded Image of 2019

The scene in which Arthur Fleck, having fully become the Joker, dances on the stairs of the Anderson Avenue steps in the Bronx (while Hildur Guðnadóttir's "Bathroom Dance" plays on the score), was the most downloaded image and most shared video clip of any film released in 2019. The stairs were subsequently renamed by graffiti artists "Joker Stairs" and became a tourist destination visited by thousands of visitors annually. The dance communicates liberation — the specific quality of someone who has abandoned the constraints of social identity and found, in that abandonment, a terrifying freedom.

The Joker Legacy — Phoenix vs Ledger

The comparison between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker (2019) and Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) is the defining debate in superhero performance: Ledger's Joker is theatrical, philosophical, an anarchist who wants to prove a point about human nature; Phoenix's is internalised, psychological, a man whose violence is the predictable consequence of specific social failures. Both performances are confirmed at 98types: Joker (2019) and The Dark Knight (2008). Buy both = the complete Joker performance debate as museum-grade wall art from £6.
