Rupert Everett's The Happy Prince — which he wrote, directed and stars in — is a deeply personal portrait of Oscar Wilde's last years: the exile, the poverty, the Paris bars, the failed attempt to recover dignity and the death in a dingy hotel room. Everett's identification with Wilde gives the film an authenticity and sadness that no outside director could have brought, and his physical transformation into the ageing Wilde is extraordinary.
