Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl tells the story of Lili Elbe — one of the first known recipients of gender reassignment surgery — and her wife Gerda Wegener, a painter whose portraits of Lili became famous across 1920s Europe. Eddie Redmayne's Lili and Alicia Vikander's Oscar-winning Gerda navigate the territory of identity, marriage and love that transforms when one partner discovers who they truly are.
