Joe Mantello's The Boys in the Band — the revival of Mart Crowley's 1968 play filmed with its acclaimed Broadway cast of Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer and others — is a time capsule of gay male self-understanding before Stonewall: a birthday party in a Manhattan apartment where internalized homophobia and fierce love exist in equal and devastating measure. A document of how gay men understood themselves at a specific historical moment.
