Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia was the first mainstream Hollywood film to tackle AIDS and gay discrimination directly — Tom Hanks's Oscar-winning performance as Andrew Beckett, a lawyer fired from his firm after his HIV diagnosis, and Denzel Washington's homophobic lawyer who slowly changes his mind. The film's emotional honesty, Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia and Hanks's physical transformation made it one of the most significant LGBTQ+ films ever made.
