The daffodil became Wales's national flower by a pleasant linguistic accident: in Welsh, the leek (cenhinen) and the daffodil (cenhinen Pedr — literally 'Peter's leek') are related by name, and the daffodil gradually replaced the leek as the preferred emblem — more pleasant to wear on a lapel on St David's Day, the first of March, when it appears in bloom across the Welsh landscape. Wordsworth wrote the most famous poem about daffodils — but he was English.
