The Cantuta (Cantua buxifolia) is Peru's national flower — the sacred flower of the Inca Empire, used in religious offerings at Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán and the temples of Cusco. It grows at the altitude of the Sacred Valley, where the Incas built their greatest cities, and blooms in red, yellow and white — the colours of the Inca rainbow flag. After the Spanish conquest, Catholic missionaries incorporated the cantuta into Corpus Christi festivals, where it was already understood as something sacred.
