Brazil is home to the world's largest number of orchid species — over 2,500 — and the Cattleya labiata, the Crimson Cattleya, was chosen as the national flower to represent that extraordinary diversity. It was first brought to Europe in 1818, packed as pippings material around other specimens, and when it bloomed in the greenhouse of William Cattley in Hertfordshire he immediately realised he was looking at something entirely new to science.
