"Are You Not Entertained?" — 22 Years Later, Rome Returns

Gladiator II (2024), directed by Ridley Scott, grossed $503M worldwide and is the most commercially successful historical epic of the decade. Set 16 years after the events of Gladiator (2000), the film follows Lucius (Paul Mescal) — grandson of Marcus Aurelius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) — who is captured following a Roman military campaign in North Africa and sold into gladiatorial slavery under the ownership of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), an ambitious arms dealer whose political machinations threaten the empire. The film is Ridley Scott's return to the Rome that made Gladiator (2000) the highest-grossing film of its year and one of the finest historical epics in cinema history.

Paul Mescal's casting as Lucius is the production's defining creative decision: a performer whose specific quality — the combination of physical presence and emotional transparency that made Normal People (2020) the defining lockdown viewing experience — gives Gladiator II a protagonist whose interiority is as compelling as his physicality. Where Russell Crowe's Maximus was grief and rage directed outward, Mescal's Lucius is grief and confusion directed inward: a man who discovers his identity, his history and his inheritance simultaneously in the arena.

Denzel Washington as Macrinus — The Finest Villain of 2024

Denzel Washington's Macrinus is the performance that critics unanimously identified as the film's defining element: a character whose specific combination of intelligence, ambition, charm and violence Washington deploys with the precision of someone who has spent fifty years studying how power works in cinema. Macrinus is simultaneously mentor, exploiter, rival and philosophical counterpart to Lucius; Washington plays every dimension of the relationship with a specific enjoyment of the character's moral complexity that makes the villain the film's most watchable figure in every scene he inhabits.

Ridley Scott at 87 — The Most Productive Director of His Generation

Ridley Scott directed Gladiator II at 87 years old — an age at which most directors have been retired for twenty years — making him the oldest filmmaker to direct a major studio blockbuster in cinema history. Scott's filmography at 87 includes Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Thelma and Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), The Martian (2015), The Last Duel (2021), House of Gucci (2021), Napoleon (2023) and Gladiator II (2024). The specific quality of Scott's direction — the visual precision, the ability to manage large-scale practical effects, the commitment to physical production over digital substitution — has not diminished. The Gladiator II poster at 98types captures the film's specific aesthetic: the dust, the bronze, the specific palette of Roman sun and arena shadow.
