"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" — 36 Years Later

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega, grossed $450M worldwide and opened the 81st Venice Film Festival — making it the first Hollywood blockbuster sequel to open at Venice in the festival's history. The film is a direct sequel to Beetlejuice (1988), reuniting Keaton and Ryder with Burton after 36 years, and introducing Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz, the teenage daughter of Lydia (Ryder) — a character who inherits her mother's specific capacity to see and communicate with the dead.

The casting of Ortega was the production's most commercially astute decision: coming off the global success of Wednesday (Netflix, 2022) — a Tim Burton-directed series in which Ortega plays Wednesday Addams — Ortega brings an audience that is identically positioned to enjoy both Wednesday and Beetlejuice: teenage girls who find the gothic aesthetics of Burton's visual universe more appealing than conventional mainstream cinema. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice poster captures the film's visual identity: the black-and-white stripes, the green slime, the Neitherworld aesthetic that Burton has refined across four decades.

Michael Keaton — The Most Reliable Comeback in Cinema

Michael Keaton's return to the role of Betelgeuse is the most commercially successful character comeback of the decade: a performer who was written off as a diminished star after the peak of his career (Batman, 1989; Batman Returns, 1992) who has since had three major career rebirths — Birdman (2014), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and now Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). Keaton's specific gift for inhabiting characters who operate outside the normal social register — the specific quality of someone for whom the rules of polite behaviour are genuinely optional — has only become more developed in 36 years. Betelgeuse in 2024 is the same character with six more years of experience being dead.

Jenna Ortega — The New Face of Tim Burton's Universe

Jenna Ortega's Astrid Deetz inherits her mother Lydia's ability to communicate with the dead, her aesthetic sensibility (the black wardrobe, the preference for cemeteries, the specific quality of finding the supernatural less frightening than the social) and her complicated relationship with her mother's fame. Ortega's performance — building on the Wednesday characterisation without repeating it, creating a character who is definitively Lydia's daughter rather than Wednesday Addams in different clothes — is the most technically precise work of her film career.

The Beetlejuice Poster as Gothic Wall Art

The Beetlejuice visual identity is the most immediately recognisable in Tim Burton's filmography: the black-and-white stripes, the green tones, the Neitherworld bureaucracy aesthetic. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice poster works as Halloween decor in October, as cult horror comedy wall art year-round, and as a statement of Tim Burton loyalty in any season. Buy the Beetlejuice poster with Batman (1989) — also Tim Burton, also Michael Keaton — = the complete Tim Burton/Keaton collaboration wall from £6. Add The Shining = 3 prints + 1 free from £9.
