PLATE C — Parthenon, Athenae. Architectural Study. Built between 447 and 432 BCE on the Acropolis of Athens, commissioned by Pericles and designed by Iktinos and Kallikrates under Pheidias. Dedicated to Athena Parthenos — Athena the Virgin. The supreme example of ancient Greek architecture: 8 x 17 Doric columns of Pentelic marble, with optical corrections — columns that lean inward and swell at the centre (entasis) — that make the building appear perfectly straight. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Botanical companions from ancient Greece: Olive Tree (Olea europaea, sacred to Athena), Bay Laurel (sacred to Apollo), Acanthus mollis (the leaf that inspired the Corinthian capital), Hyacinth, Greek Cyclamen, Bearded Iris and Corn Poppy. Labels: naos/cella, peristyle columns, frieze, pediment, capital, stylobate, opisthodomos, triglyphs. The sacred note: Athena won the patronage of Athens with the gift of the olive tree.
