Britain on screen

Britain is one of the most filmed countries in the world. Its castles became Hogwarts, its stately homes became Pemberley, Downton and Saltburn, its glens and coasts became Westeros, Summerisle and a post-apocalyptic Northumberland. For film and TV fans, visiting these places is one of the best ways to see the country. We have mapped 65 real filming locations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for 53 films and TV series in our poster collection. For each place you will find the scene filmed there, a visitor tip and the poster to take home. Explore them on our interactive UK Film & TV Locations Map, or start in the capital with our London Film & TV Locations Map.

All the locations below are publicly visible or open to visitors at least some of the time. Some are private homes that can only be seen from the road or on open days, and we say so where that applies. Always check opening times before you travel, especially for stately homes, which often close in winter.

Studio Tour London, Christ Church & New College, Oxford, Lacock Abbey, Gloucester Cathedral. In London, add King's Cross and Platform 9ΒΎ, Leadenhall Market, Australia House and the Millennium Bridge from our London map.

The easiest way to see the Scottish locations is by train: the Jacobite steam train from Fort William crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and Glen Nevis and Glencoe are a short drive away. In England, Alnwick and Durham are an hour apart, and Lacock and Gloucester can be combined in a day from Bath. Finish at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Leavesden, where the films were made. Our Philosopher's Stone poster, Prisoner of Azkaban poster and Hedwig's Theme print are the perfect souvenirs.

Three film road trips

1. The Scottish Highlands (3–4 days): Edinburgh for Trainspotting and Avengers: Infinity War, the Forth Bridge from The 39 Steps, Doune Castle and Castle Stalker for Monty Python, Glencoe and Glen Etive for Skyfall, then Glen Nevis and the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Add Corrour by train on the West Highland Line, and Plockton if you have time.

2. The North of England (3 days): Alnwick Castle and Holy Island, Hadrian's Wall and Sycamore Gap, Durham Cathedral and Easington Colliery for Billy Elliot, Redcar for Atonement, then Goathland and Castle Howard in Yorkshire. Return via Sheffield for The Full Monty.

3. Stately homes and the South (4–5 days): Highclere for Downton Abbey, Stourhead and Dyrham Park, Lacock and Bath for Harry Potter and Bridgerton, Wells for Hot Fuzz, Cheddar Gorge, then the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis and Weymouth. Head east for Hatfield House, Knebworth and the Harry Potter studios.

Tips for visiting film locations in the UK

  • Check opening times: stately homes such as Highclere, Chatsworth and Castle Howard have seasonal opening, and some sell out months ahead.
  • Respect private homes: Drayton House (Saltburn) and Mentmore Towers (Eyes Wide Shut) are private, so view them from public roads and footpaths only.
  • Check the tides: Holy Island and St Michael's Mount are cut off at high tide.
  • Use membership passes: many locations belong to the National Trust, English Heritage or Historic Environment Scotland; membership can save a lot of money on a film road trip.
  • Go early: popular spots like the Dark Hedges and the Glenfinnan viewpoint are much quieter first thing in the morning.
  • Rewatch first: watching the scene before you visit makes recognising the exact spot much more fun.
