The King of Comedy is Martin Scorsese's most underrated film and Elena has been making everyone sit down and watch it for years. Robert De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin, an aspiring stand-up comedian who becomes obsessively fixated on a famous talk show host (Jerry Lewis) — with escalating, deeply uncomfortable consequences. The film is a prescient satire on celebrity culture and the pathological desire for fame that feels more relevant in 2026 than it did in 1982. It influenced Joker directly — Todd Phillips cited it as a primary reference. De Niro's performance is extraordinary: uncomfortable, funny and genuinely unsettling simultaneously.
