"Now I Am Become Death" — Nolan's Finest Film

Oppenheimer (2023), written and directed by Christopher Nolan, won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) — Nolan's first Oscar in each category after five previous Best Director nominations. The film is an adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), tracking the theoretical physicist from his graduate studies in Europe through the Manhattan Project, the Trinity nuclear test, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the 1954 security hearing in which the United States government effectively destroyed the man who had built its most consequential weapon.

The Trinity test sequence — the first detonation of a nuclear device, filmed at the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, on 16 July 1945 in the film's timeline — was shot by Nolan using practical effects: miniatures, high explosives, incendiary materials and long-lens photography, without CGI. The rationale is both aesthetic (practical effects have a specific texture that CGI cannot replicate) and moral (to depict the Trinity test using digital fakery would be a kind of dishonesty about the reality of what happened). The result is the most terrifying non-documentary depiction of nuclear detonation in cinema history.

Cillian Murphy's Performance — The Finest Male Lead of the 2020s

Cillian Murphy's J. Robert Oppenheimer is the finest male lead performance of the decade: a portrayal of genius, ambition, guilt and the specific quality of someone who understands the implications of what they have done and cannot undo it. Murphy prepared for the role by reading extensively about Oppenheimer's life, learning quantum physics at a level sufficient to discuss it with physicists, and developing Oppenheimer's specific physical presence — the lanky, slightly hunched posture, the porkpie hat, the pipe — into a fully inhabited characterisation. The security hearing sequences, in which Oppenheimer is systematically dismantled by Lewis Strauss's machinations, are the film's emotional core.

Barbenheimer — The Cultural Phenomenon That Saved Cinema

Oppenheimer was released on 21 July 2023 alongside Greta Gerwig's Barbie — creating the "Barbenheimer" double-feature phenomenon in which millions of viewers worldwide watched both films in the same day, combined or in sequence. The internet meme — images of Oppenheimer's mushroom cloud behind Barbie's pink logo, the tagline "You can do anything and also you are going to die" — generated the most significant cinematic cultural conversation since The Dark Knight's release in 2008. The combined $2.4B global gross of both films was the event that definitively demonstrated theatrical cinema's survival of the streaming challenge. Both posters are confirmed at 98types: Oppenheimer + Barbie = the Barbenheimer wall from £6.
