👛 Dunwall — The World

Dunwall is the capital city of the Empire of the Isles — a world of Victorian steampunk in which whale oil (Pandyssian oil) powers the city's technology: arc pylons, river krusts, electric rails, door locks and watchtowers. The city is suffering a plague of Weepers — people in the final stages of rat plague infection, mad with pain — and the Empress Jessamine Kaldwin has been assassinated. Corvo Attano, her Royal Protector, has been falsely accused of the murder and imprisoned awaiting execution. The game begins with his escape.

Dunwall is a city in the tradition of Dickensian London: the wealth of the Boyle Estate and Holger Square existing in direct proximity to the desperate poverty of the Flooded District and the Distillery District. The specific Victorian aesthetic — cobblestones, gas lanterns, whale-powered factories, the specific smell of industrialisation implied by the visual detail — makes Dunwall one of gaming's most fully realised fictional cities. The Dunwall of Dishonored is the most detailed portrait of a specific moment in a fictional history that any immersive sim has attempted.

Corvo Attano — The Marked Man

Corvo Attano is the Royal Protector of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin, falsely accused of her murder by the Lord Regent Hiram Burrows in a political conspiracy. He escapes from Coldridge Prison with the help of the Loyalist conspiracy and receives the Mark of the Outsider — a supernatural sigil that grants him access to otherworldly powers. What distinguishes Corvo from most action game protagonists is the silence of his characterisation in the first game: he is voiceless, allowing the player's choices to define him entirely.

Dishonored 2 — Emily Kaldwin

Dishonored 2 (2016) takes place fifteen years after the events of the original game and offers the player the choice of playing as either Corvo Attano (voiced this time by Stephen Russell) or Emily Kaldwin — Jessamine's daughter, now the grown Empress, overthrown by the witch Delilah Copperspoon in a coup. Emily's powers differ from Corvo's: where Corvo's Blink is short-range teleportation, Emily's Far Reach is a grappling hook that pulls her to a target. Both characters' powers can be upgraded toward non-lethal or lethal playstyles.

The Clockwork Mansion level — an entire building whose walls, floors and rooms rearrange at the pull of levers by the mechanist Kirin Jindosh — is widely considered the finest single level in any immersive sim. The design challenge it poses (navigating a space whose geometry is actively hostile and changing) and the multiple solutions available (stealth through the walls, direct confrontation, avoiding Jindosh entirely) represent immersive sim design at its absolute peak.
